Growing classic varieties of high-acid, high-sugar yellow peaches, the Peterson’s have always used ecological farming practices. They had the farm certified as organic(farming without synthetic pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers) in 1987 after being members of the California Clean Growers Association(COGA) for several years. The COGA was a group of family farms joined together to promote environmentally responsible farming. “Making money wasn’t the most important thing,”said Karen. “We
considered the farm successful if it supported the family and paid for
itself.”
